The University of Sussex and DataSeer are pleased to announce a new pilot program analyzing articles authored by Sussex researchers through the lens of DataSeer’s Open Science Metrics tool. Open Science Metrics use natural language processing and artificial intelligence to measure open science practices across large volumes of articles, allowing institutions, publishers, and funders to understand uptake, set goals, and track progress.
The University of Sussex pilot will focus on a sample of 1,000 publicly available articles published in 2022, 2023, or 2024, and spanning a range of disciplines from chemistry to psychology to ecology. Results will show rates of data sharing, code sharing, protocol sharing, preprint posting, repository use, and more. The university will also be able to identify the most popular repositories and servers among its authors, and to analyze the underlying pilot data using many different filters.
The University of Sussex supports open research broadly, and the transition to Open Access envisioned by Plan S. Through the Open Science Metrics trial, Sussex hopes to gain insight into researcher practices that can help to inform strategy and drive future progress toward its goals for transparent and reproducible research.
“The University of Sussex is committed to the long-term development of an Open Research culture, with open data a key aspect of our future strategy. We are excited to work with Dataseer on this initiative to enhance our knowledge of our researchers’ data publishing behavior,” said Helen Webb & Adam Harwood of the University of Sussex Library Research Data team.
Tim Vines, founder and CEO of DataSeer said, “We are thrilled to contribute to the University of Sussex’s efforts to promote and support open science and everything that comes with it—greater accessibility, higher standard of rigor and research integrity, and far-reaching impact.”
This type of analysis adds a vital mission dimension to our understanding of open science—a top-level business intelligence perspective that is key to taking openness to the next level.
